How will i track my referrals?

To track the performance of your referrals, you can visit either your Reports Overview page or your Advanced Reports page, being sure to select referrals as the product. We'll display clicks, sign-ups, conversions and earnings separately for each referral product or service and will report your referral statistics in the following manner:

Clicks: We'll report a click every time a user clicks on one of your referral buttons for any product.

Sign-ups: A sign-up will be displayed every time a user signs up for AdSense. Some products, like Firefox, do not require a sign-up and therefore will not report sign-ups.

Conversions: Each product you refer will show conversion statistics. A conversion displayed in your reports indicates that you've reached the threshold necessary to receive earnings for that referral. For example, we'll show a conversion each time a user you've referred downloads and runs Firefox, or when a publisher you've referred first earns US $100 from AdSense.

Earnings: As with your other AdSense reports, the earnings we'll display are your revenue for referrals, separated by product.

How much can i earn from referrals?

Your earnings for referrals will vary depending on the product you're referring.

AdSense: When a user you've referred to AdSense first earns US$100 within 180 days, we'll credit your AdSense account with US$100.

Firefox plus Google Toolbar: When a user you've referred to Firefox plus Google Toolbar runs Firefox for the first time, you'll receive up to US$1 in your account, depending on the user's location. Your referral must be a Windows user, who has not previously installed Firefox, in order for you to receive credit.

AdWords: When a user you've referred to AdWords signs up and spends US$100 within 90 days, we'll credit your AdSense account with US$20.

Pack: When a Windows user you've referred to Pack downloads and installs the product, you'll receive up to US$2 in your account.

Picasa: When a user you've referred to Picasa downloads and runs the product for the first time, we'll credit your account with up to US$1. The user you refer must be using Windows and not have previously installed Picasa in order for you to receive credit.

You can track your earnings from referrals by visiting your Overview page, where we'll display earnings separately for each product.

Monthly totals of referral credits will appear on your Payment History page - just click the Earnings detail for any month to view specifics about how much you've earned through referrals. Your earnings from referrals will be included with your earnings from AdSense for content and AdSense for search.

If you have a blog on the new version of Blogger in beta, we're happy to introduce you to the drag-and-drop AdSense widget! Using this new feature, you can easily add AdSense to your blog by following these instructions.

1. First, log into the new version of Blogger with your Google Account. Click on the Layout link next to the blog where you’d like to feature Google ads.

(If you don’t see the Layout option, it’s possible that your beta blog is still in the classic template -- visit your blog’s Template page and click Customize Design. You can then upgrade your blog to the new template in minutes.)

2. Next you should be taken to your Template – Page Elements page. Click on one of the Add a Page Element links shown below.

3. In the pop-up window, click the blue Add to Blog button underneath the AdSense option.

4. If you already have an AdSense account, simply sign in with your AdSense login; if not, you can create an account directly on this page. After signing in, you can select your preferred color template and ad format. When you're finished, click on the orange Save Changes button

Google Adsense Unique Features: Google Adsense is unique for the fact that advertisements displayed on your site can be both pay per click (PPC) or cost per 1000 impressions (CPM). PPC ads are self explanatory. If a viewers clicks, you get paid. However, CPM ads are a little different and its something that Yahoo Publisher Network doesn’t offer on their program. In a nutshell, you are paid money for displaying CPM ads on your site. You are paid by how many times the advertisement is viewed or displayed on your site… Not by how many times it was clicked. This is very useful for publishers that have sites with moderate to heavy traffic as every time someone visits your site and a CPM ad is displayed, you generate a little bit of additional money, where as if you run YPN ads on your site… this is money that would be missed.

Wide Selection of Advertisements: There is a huge selection of different size ads you can use with Google Adsense. I can’t fail to mention also that you have many different choices, including deciding whether to display image ads or text ads, or both! YPN doesn’t give you the option to control text or image ads being displayed and appear on your site randomly. Having the ability to create such well thought out custom advertisements gives you a higher chance of success with the advertisement serving program. Google Adsense considers this and gives you all the tools needed towards creating effective advertisements on your site.

Advanced Analysis and Reporting: While YPN also provides some tools for analysis, Google Adsense has them beat by a long shot. If you spend about an hour learning how to utilize the analysis and reporting tools provided by Google Adsense, you will know precisely which ads on your site are the most attractive, which ones pay the best, and which ones are not effective at all. Google Adsense gives you the ability to totally micro-manage the ads being displayed on your site, and if you are a picky bean counter like myself, this should prove to be very useful to you.

Yahoo Publisher Network :

YPN is the only program that I have gotten paid. I have used both programs on BTI in the past and in the past three months of using YPN, I have received two $125 dollar payments. I am very pleased and totally thrilled to receive these payments. Just a few days ago I did make the switch back to Google Adsense. I do intend on using YPN again in the very near future, but at this time I want to experiment again with Adsense.

Why Do I Like Yahoo Publisher Network? For me, using YPN was great when BTI was only getting a few hundred visits each day. To me, it was a balancing act. As it seems, YPN pays more per click compared to Google Adsense. Sites with very little to somewhat moderate amounts of traffic, can benefit more from using YPN instead of Adsense for the fact that their PPC pays higher. Here are some tips for achieving success with Adsense.
1. Create a website with your (YourSite.com). Don’t try to use a free web host because your site will likely have banners and pop-ups and get rejected because it looks unprofessional. Not to mention, a free web host will give you a website address like this example :

See how much more clean, concise and professional that last link is?
If paying for a website causes you to frown, remember the money you earn from Adsense could more than pay for the web hosting fees you’ll incur.

Look at it as an investment instead of a cost. I never dreamed I’d have this much success with this program. My Adsense earnings clearly outweigh the few dollars I pay every month to maintain my sites.

2. If you don’t know web programming or have no desire to learn it, get a beginner’s design editor like Microsoft FrontPage. Using this program is a lot like using Microsoft Word. You can also publish your content directly to the web.

Keep in mind you can’t use FrontPage alone. You must have a web host that will allow you to publish your site to the Internet via FrontPage. (More on web hosting in a sec.)

3. If the main goal of your site is to make money with Adsense, be sure to choose a topic that you know a lot about so you can write lots and lots of content.

Don’t like to write? No problem! There are sites like www.articlecity.com that provide free reprint rights. Just search their database and find articles that match the theme of your site.

Don’t rely completely on sites like this, however. You’ll definitely want to have some of your own unique content. A few articles from these sites is fine, but relying on them for 90% of your information is not going to help your site.

4. Get traffic. Once your site is up and running you’ll need to learn how to get your site listed in the major search engines.

Getting into Google is completely free right now and can bring in hundreds or even thousands of visitors per day. All you have to do is submit your site to them and wait patiently while Google ads it to the index. It can take a few months. Patience is key with Google. Then do the same with Yahoo, MSN, etc.

5. Partner up with other related sites and participate in link swaps. This means that you place a link to another person’s site on your own site and they do the same for you in return. This is a great way to get even more free traffic.

4 Most Profitable Keywords inside AdSense system

"Expensive keyword" (high CPC) isn't equal to "profitable keyword" (high earnings) due to the low volume of traffic expensive (niche) keywords produce. The best way to find really profitable keywords is to rank keywords by cost/day (cost per click X clicks/day) rather than cost per click.

Almost all AdSense publishers are looking for the most expensive keywords. Let's have a look at the top 100 most expensive keywords. But first let's add 2 extra columns to the list: clicks/day and cost/day by Google AdWords estimation:

How to set up URL channels

You may have more than one sites displaying AdSense Ads for Content. You may want to see which site is performing better. To track this, you will have to set up URL channels. Then all the clicks and earnings coming from that site will be shown in the report. To set up URL channels, do the following steps:

1. Sign into your AdSense Account
2. Click the "AdSense Setup"
3. There will be 3 choices, "AdSense for Content" , "AdSense for Search and Referrals". Click "AdSense for Content".
4. Under the AdSense Setup tab, click "Channels"
5. Click "URL channels" (See screenshot below.)
6. Click "Add new URL channels"
7. In the box, enter the URL's of the sites you want to track, one URL per line
8. Then click "Add channels" and you are done.

The AdSense Formula for Making Money

The only AdSense formula that you need to know is this:

Earnings = number of clicks * average price per click

This is what I call the Fundamental AdSense Formula because you can derive almost every AdSense "secret" directly or indirectly from this formula. Do you want to earn more with AdSense? You have two ways of doing it:

1. Increase the number of clicks, and/or

2. Increase the average price per click

Your earnings will only go up if you do one or the other, and ideally both. It's an obvious formula, yes, but it's amazing how many people lose sight of it in their quest for increased AdSense earnings.

Increasing the Number of AdSense Clicks

Increasing the number of times the ads on your site or blog are clicked is the most obvious strategy. There are two general strategies you can follow:

1. Increase the traffic to the site, and/or

2. Adjust the ads to make them more "clickable"

Getting traffic is hard and takes time, so don't look at it as a quick fix. The best way to get traffic is to provide useful, unique content and to rank highly in search engine rankings for keywords related to that content. In other words, use standard search engine optimization techniques. DO NOT "buy" traffic or use "link farms" or other dubious techniques. Other tips for getting traffic:

1. Publish articles, even free ones, with links back to your site.

2. Include a link to your site in the signature at the bottom of your emails or in any forum postings you make (if the forum allows it).

3. Participate in forums/groups related to the content of your site or blog. The key is to participate, not lurk, and don't just post messages promoting your site.

4. Add comments (relevant ones only, please) to other blogs, you can usually link back to yours. (This won't help your search engine rankings, but it may allow others who are reading those comments to find your own site.)

5. Syndicate your content (trivial if you have a blog) and make sure that the content is registered with syndication aggregators.

6. List your site in relevant directories.

Adjusting the ads is something you can do almost immediately:

1. Position the ads on the page in order to make them more noticeable. Google even publishes a helpful heat map (see https://www.google.com/support/adsense/bin/static.py?page=tips.html ) for AdSense publishers.

2. Choose the best AdSense ad format that works for your site.

3. Change the ad colors either to make the ads blend in with your site or to make them stand out. Again, it varies depending on the site.

Whatever you do, DO NOT ENTICE VISITORS TO CLICK THE ADS. Google is very strict about this, see the AdSense program policies (found at https://www.google.com/adsense/policies ) for the details.

Increasing the Average AdSense Price Per Click

Increasing the average price per click you receive from AdSense is the other strategy for increasing your overall AdSense earnings. You can do this by:

1. Carefully targeting your content, and/or

2. Filtering out and avoiding low-paying ads

Content targeting isn't just about creating relevant, unique content. It's also making sure that that content is written to target the higher-paying keywords associated with a given topic. This means:

1. Figuring out which keyword variations for that topic pay more. Often the more specialized variations and phrases pay more than the "generic" terms.

2. Ensuring that the keyword density of the content favors the higher-paying keyword variations. See http://www.MakeEasyMoneyWithGoogle.com/vioxx-lawsuit.html for an example of well-targeted ads due to appropriate keyword density.

And to reduce the occurrence of lower-paying ads, consider these two strategies:

1. Use AdSense's competitive filter mechanism to screen out the ads that you don't want.

2. Show fewer ads on a page. The fewer ads you show, the more the higher-paying ads get displayed and clicked.

Many publishers also report that their earnings increase if they remove ads completely from pages with few or no clicks. Again, the "less is more" strategy favors the higher-paying ads.

There's No Magic

As you can see, there's no magic involved to increasing your AdSense earnings. The Fundamental AdSense Formula is easy to understand, but that doesn't mean it's easy to apply the formula. It takes time and effort to do it, just like most things.

Here are a few random thoughts:

AdWords Changes

A lot of the complaints against AdSense over the last few months have probably got more to do with changes to AdWords than anything. Arbitrage publishers were rocked a couple of months back when changes were made to AdWords that made it more expensive to send readers to landing pages in the hope of getting them to click AdSense ads that earned more than the AdWords ads that got them there. It’s no wonder that people are complaining about AdSense as a way to Monetize Arbitrage with the changes that were made.

However if you’re not into Arbitrage and are a publisher who develops quality sites that grow a natural readership via SE traffic or loyal readers then I think AdSense is still a great way to go - particularly if you have a blog with some commercial edge to it (ie AdSense doesn’t tend to work well on religious, political or personal sites).

AdSense Alternatives

The last 12 months have seen a lot more competition for AdSense. I have noticed a slight drop off in bloggers raving about AdSense partly because they’re now raving about other ad systems.

In my chats with bloggers I’m seeing a number of other income streams mentioned again and again. Here’s a few:

1. Text Link Ads (aff) - the team at TLA have gradually built a loyal publisher list over the past few months but providing an ad system that may not be as flashy or spectacular as AdSense in some senses but which works. Interestingly - I’ve chatted with a number of smaller bloggers over the past few weeks who say that TLA actually is their biggest earner. This is because it is not reliant upon clicks or traffic at all and is a very passive income for a blog that over time grows as more advertisers buy links. I spoke to an owner of a lesser known blog network recently and he told me that his network is earning five figures a month with TLA.

2. Amazon Associates - some publishers laugh off Amazon as not being worth the effort because the payouts are so small (4-6% in post cases) but I’ve chatted with a few publishers this week who are doing very well from Amazon. The advantage of Amazon over many affiliate programs is that they are a trusted brand. If you pick the right products to promote you can actually do quite well from them. I chatted with a publisher this week who is promoting lawn mowers and power tools on Amazon. Sell a $2000 tractor/mower a few times a week and it certainly adds up.

3. Clicksor (aff) - as unpopular as they became with some publishers in their early days of launching they continue to be a big earner for some bloggers. They continue to be neck and neck with AdSense for me in the earnings they bring in. They continue to improve their products and expand what they offer in terms of channels and I know of a few product oriented bloggers who make more from them than anything else. Can’t say too much but expect their range of advertising methods to continue to increase in the coming months.

4. YPN - Yahoo’s contextual advertising system is still in beta (it has been a longer process than many expected) and is yet to fully compete with AdSense. I’ve given it a go (via b5’s account) and wasn’t too impressed with how it converted here at ProBlogger but do know of some bloggers who continue to find that it does well for them. I think it’s a blog by blog proposition but is definitely an ad network to consider if you can get into the beta test.

5. Direct Sales - another emerging trend among bloggers (and networks of them) is the increased focus upon direct deals that are being done between bloggers and sellers (and their representatives).Willing to do deals as the word gets out that blogs are online real estate that converts pretty well for them. It’s not always easy to negotiate these deals as a single blogger with a relatively small readership but we’re now seeing networks of bloggers banding together which makes it much easier to negotiate such deals.

6. Product Bloggers - while there are not a lot of examples of this yet I suspect that 2007 will be a year that quite a few bloggers will launch products in their niches. Bloggers are starting to switch onto the fact that after a year or two of blogging on a topic that they are sitting upon a goldmine of information and expertise that can be reused in other forums. While this past year saw a number of bloggers release books I know of quite a few who are working up to releasing online information products, membership sites and coaching services in their areas of expertise. Whether they succeed or not is yet to be seen but it’s a logical next step for many bloggers.

Of course there are many other AdSense Alternatives out there for publishers also (with more coming I’m told). The variety of systems open to publishers surely is having some impact upon AdSense and what people are earning with it.

14 tips on increasing your Blog’s Page Views

Interlink your Posts

This is perhaps the most simple method to increase your pageviews. Whenever you write an article, check whether you have written similar articles. If so link to them. This is helpful for new readers as well as it is not necessary that all your readers have been with you from the beginning. But remember that too much interlinking can get your readers distracted from the orginal post.

Highlight Related Posts

For WordPress users there is a plugin called Related Posts that can automatically find related posts for you based on the keywords you used in the article. You can do this manually if you want, but I prefer the plugin as it is a lot easier. There may be a similar plugin for other Blog Platforms, but I am not sure about it.

It is best that you place 5 related posts just after the post ends. You can find more useful WordPress Plugins here.

Add a Newsletter or Post Notification Services

Services such Zookoda and FeedBurner can be used to notify readers of new posts via email thereby increasing page views. I think that notifying new posts through emails are more effective than feeds as people check their mails many times a day.

Highlight Key Posts in Prominent Positions

You may have noticed that my header links to some of the important articles of johntp.com. When visitors reach this blog there’s a high chance that they will notice these links and click them. My header links has helped me almost double my pageviews.

‘Best of’ Pages

I have collected some of the best articles and put them on a separate page called Top Posts. This not only helps to increase pageviews but also helps in converting casual surfers to regular readers.

I also use a WordPress Plugin called ‘Noteworthy‘ with which I mark some of the interesting articles. The plugin automatically puts the marked posts to a category which I named ‘Must Read‘. This can also help in increasing the pageviews of those posts. In short highlight your top posts in all ways possible.

Write a Series of Posts

A series of posts on a topic can drive readers from the first part to the last thereby increasing pageviews. Readers will also return often to read what you have to say on the next part.

Although I suggest you don’t break every article into a series of posts as it may irritate some readers.

Use Extended Entires on your Front Page

For WordPress users there is a ‘more’ feature that breaks long posts with a ‘more…’ or ‘Continue reading post name‘ that links to the complete post. This can help in increasing pageviews but you must use it only for long posts as it can get annoying for certain readers when used too much.

Run a Blog Project or Meme

Group writing projects can get you new links and readers aswell as visitors who come back multiple times in a week to see what updates there had been to it. Projects or competitions works best if you have a lot of loyal readers willing to participate.

Excerpts in RSS feeds

If you use Full Feeds, your readers are likely to read your content through feeds and never return to your blog. To increase page views you may switch to Partial Feeds.

Here at johntp.com, after switching to partial feeds I have found an increase in the number of people coming back and an unexpected increase in RSS readers.

Entice RSS Readers to Visit

If you decide to use Full feeds, you need to find ways to get your subscribers to visit your blog. Darren suggests methods such as Polls, writing posts in a way that invites comments and interlinking posts.

Build Interactivity into your Blog

The more your readers interact on your blog the more pages they view. Comments and polls are a good way to interact with readers.

You can encourage comments by asking question or opinions at the end of evey post. If a reader leaves a comment or takes part in a poll they are likely to come back again to see if there are any replies to their comments or to find out the result of the poll. Building an interactive blog can increase your pageviews a lot.

Draw People Back to Comments

For WordPress users there are a few plugins that help you make your blog more interactive regarding comments. First is a plugin called Brian’s Latest Comments that shows an overview of the recently active articles and the last people to comment on them.

You can also give your readers the opportunity to follow your comments either by having a RSS feed for comments on your blog or by allowing them to subscribe to comments via email with Subscribe To Comments WordPress Plugin.

You can encourage your readers to comment more often by listing the Top 10 Commentators of your blog and linking directly to their blogs. You can do this automatically with the Top Commentators Wordpress Plugin.

Add a Search Feature

Adding a Search feature to your blog allows your readers to search for previous posts thereby increasing pageviews. Your theme may already be having it by default.

Give Your Readers a Homework Assignment

I have not yet tried this method and so can’t comment on it. I am not even sure if it will work for my kind of blog. This method has more chance of working on blogs like Darren’s Photography Blog.

This might not be something new to you, but it's definately a good news to those AdSense beginners trying to maximize the earnings.

Two weeks ago, I discovered a great site showing the MFA sites' url. I added the links to my Competitive Ad Filter since there was no url before. I check my AdSense revenue daily and found out that my earnings were increasing. Since the number of clicks were not increasing, then, I realize that by filtering MFA sites I can earn even more per click. I'm always amazed by how top MFA sites like best4sites[dot]net, all-free-info[dot]com, click-here-4-best[dot]info showing at top of my ads.

I started to check each and every AdSense links on my sites and filtered all the MFA sites. Of course, you can't click on your own AdSense links. However, you are allowed to right click on your own AdSense ad title to find out the destination url of the ads. And add them to the Competitive Ad Filter. I would also suggest you all to add tinyurl[dot]com and denmark[dot]com to your filter list since many MFA sites love to use these services to hide their urls.

To AdSense team: please increase the limit of URL of the Competitive Ad Filter. The current 200 urls limit is not enough since the MFA sites are increasing at a very fast pace (due to your kindness for allowing these no-content-but-only-adsense sites showing AdSense).

-Google will now offer video advertising as an option to its Adwords advertisers to boost its revenues.

Google Inc. is now planning to launch a new service that will place video commercials on the hundreds of thousands of Web sites - Google Adsense publishers - where Google sells advertising. This step is the latest in Google's move to move beyond static text ads. The move will put Google squarely into competition with television networks as advertisers are more than willing to shell out for online commercials. That is because large advertisers have now come to realise that a large number of their target audience spends more time on the Web than anything else.

Designed to be a non-intrusive product, the videos Adsense ads will first appear as static ads in television-screen like boxes. The video starts rolling only when the consumer clicks on the screen unlike video ads that normally jump off pages and start on their own. Consumers will have the option to start or ignore an ad, but they will not be able to stop or pause, adjust the volume or click through to the advertiser's site. The duration of the commercials will be up to two minutes.

According to reports, Google will introduce the ads this week. Initially, the video ads will be available to Adwords advertisers in the US, Canada and Japan. Later, Google will roll them out in other territories. Google will host video ads on its own servers instead of making customers deal with a third-party supplier, unlike other video advertisers.

Google will not place video ads next to search results - on its own site or elsewhere, for now. It will distribute them to those sites which make use of Google's context-sensitive text and image ads to earn revenues - the Adsense publishers . Most of the companies that sell video ads place them as part as part of a stream of programming rather than on Web pages where users have to click to watch the video. That is largely because most advertisers do not think that consumers will be motivated enough to click on videos to watch it.

Advertisers will have to bid more than the combined cost of two or four text ads that can be placed on the screen in the same area that the video ad will occupy.

Advertisers will be able to place ads on sites they choose or on pages related to specific keywords. The prices that advertisers pay to display their video ads will work out to less than $20 than what other sites that offer video ads charge.

Google is looking at video ads to provide a fillip to sales growth on AdSense. Many advertisers feel that returns on buying AdSense text ads is lower. Google is looking at diversifying revenues by using video ads. Google also made a foray into radio advertising recently by buying DMark Broadcasting, a company that sells radio advertising.

Clickthrough rate (CTR) is the number of clicks an ad unit receives divided by the number of times the ad unit is shown (impressions).

Effective CPM (eCPM) is cost per 1000 impressions. From a publisher's perspective, CPM is a useful way to compare revenue across different channels and advertising programs. It is calculated by dividing total earnings by the number of impressions in thousands.

Impression is the number of times an ad is displayed on Google or on sites or products in Google's ad network. A page impression is counted each time an ad unit is displayed on a publisher's site. Page impressions are used when calculating reports for Adsense publishers, rather than ad impressions

Earnings is total money that would be given by Google Adsense for publishers who participate in their affiliate programs.

Earnings Per Click (EPC) actually is average cost per click that would be given to publishers depends on the sum of the click, page impressions and advertiser's bid. However, it's still be a Google Adsense Secret.

Calculation :

CTR = (Clicks / Impressions) * 100

EPC = Earnings Per Click

eCPM = (Earnings / Impressions) * 1000
eCPM = CTR * EPC * 10

Earnings = eCPM * Impressions / 1000

How do I install/uninstall the preview tool?

To install:
1. Right-click the link below and select Save Target As... Save the registry file (.reg) to your desktop.

2. Double-click the file from your desktop. A confirmation window will appear - click Yes to continue. The registry update will self-install.
3. Restart Internet Explorer by closing all open IE windows.
That's it! Clicking the right mouse button from any web page will open your context menu - select Google AdSense Preview Tool from the menu to launch the preview tool. Please do not click from within the ad format itself, or relevant ads will not appear within the preview tool.

To uninstall:
1. Right-click the link below and select Save Target As... Save the registry file (.reg) to your desktop

To launch the preview tool, simply right-click on any web page. From the menu that appears, select Google AdSense Preview Tool . The preview tool will open in a new window, and will display a sample set of ads for that page.
The Choose Options menu lets you select different ad formats and geo-targeted locations for the ads displayed within the preview tool.

The Choose Colors menu allows you to preview new colors. You can add up to 200 sites to your filter list. The URLs you enter into your filter list can be the actual URL of the website or the URL that is displayed on the ad for that website.

2. Click Competitive Ad Filter under the AdSense Setup tab (for AdSense for search results pages)
3. Choose the appropriate product sub-tab
Click Add / Edit Sites
4. In the appropriate text box, enter the URLs of the sites whose ads you would like to filter from your site or AdSense for search results pages. Enter one URL per line.

Experiment with multiple ad formats and locations

In general, wider ad formats tend to be more reader-friendly. Placing an ad unit after the first post will likely catch your readers' attention. When you run a forum site, ad placement and formats are key to designing ads that will be successful but not intrusive to your regular users.

Placement: Display your ad units where repeat users will notice them

Because forum regulars tend to skip the header and go straight to the meat of the thread, placing your ad unit above or below the first post can be more effective than ads next to the logo.

Place a leaderboard immediately after the last post. This provides users who make it to the end of a thread with a 'next step' when the content ends. Try to avoid placing it after the footer, though, as your readers will likely move to the next thread without seeing the ad.

Formats: Adapting your design for multiple ad units and limited space.

Using multiple ad units, you can use a variety of formats to fill ad space throughout your site. Placing a skyscraper above the fold on the left side of your forum seems to produce slightly better performance than other positioning. However, when using multiple ad units throughout the page our horizontal bias still favors the leaderboard. Our heat map provides more details.

Use horizontal link units, which are small enough to fit near the top of your forum just below the header. For the regular forum visitor, link units offer a wider range of relevant topics to browse.

However you choose to implement your ads, keep in mind that forums are highly interactive sites with regular users. Be sure to blend the ads nicely, so they don't appear overly intrusive - but don't blend them so well they mislead your users! Every forum site is different and you know your community best, so as always use your own judgment to create the most positive experience for your users.

Tip for making the most of revenue opportunities: Like most sites, forums can benefit from opting in to image ads. Supporting image ads increases the pool of ads - particularly cost-per-thousand-impression (CPM) ads - bidding to display on your site. Since forums tend to have lower clickthrough rates than other types of sites, CPM ads can improve revenue without the need for clicks. Cost Per Impression is a phrase often used in online advertising and marketing related to web traffic. It is used for measuring the worth and cost of a specific e-marketing campaign. This technique is applied with web banners, text links, e-mail spam, and opt-in e-mail advertising. (Although opt-in e-mail advertising is more commonly charged on a CPA basis.)?

The Cost Per Impression is often measured using the CPM (Cost Per Mille) metric. (A CPM is the cost of one thousand (1,000) impressions.)

CPM is considered the optimal form of selling online advertising from the publisher's point of view. A publisher gets paid for each ad that is shown.

This type of advertising arrangement closely resembles Television and Print Advertising Methods for speculating the cost of an Advertisement. Often, industry agreed approximates are used. With Television the Nielsen Ratings are used and Print is based on the circulation a publication has.

For Online Advertising, the numbers of views can be a lot more precise. When a user requests a Web Pages, the originating server creates a log entry. Also, a third party tracker can be placed in the web page which will verify how many accesses that page had.

CPM and/or Flat rate advertising deals are preferred by the Publisher/Webmaster because they will get paid regardless of any action taken.

Alternate Ads: Well, sometimes, google may show public service ads on pages that have not been spidered, or on pages where the targetted ads do not match anything for what-so-ever reason. Well, you do not generate any revenue from public service ads at all. So do signup for some other ad publishing service like yahoo. Create a html pahe on your server with yahoo ads in various formats and use the URL’s of the relevant format to serve alternate advertisements when google cannot target any ads to your site. Google allows you to target alternate ads using the attribute : “google_alternate_ad_url”. So do use it whenever you can. But do remember to use the same ad size format as the google ad.

I am tweaking my site to achieve the right mix of content, design, and commercialism.

What is the right mix?

That depends on you.

You have to decide whether you are thinking diary or book. I think of my site as a book and each post as a chapter. This chapter is about profitability.

Here are six steps to greater profits. Some of these steps I have incorporated into may site, some I have not. As my site grows and develops many more changes will develop.

The Six Steps
1. Remove the outline boxes from your ads. It sets them apart and cuts down on the flow.
2. Match the background color of the ad to that of your site. I gives the ad more of a customized look.
3. Match the color of the ad text to the color of the text on your site. Again, it adds to the continuity of the site.
4. Incorporate the ad into (or between) some of the lines of text in your article. Your visitor is more likely to click through if they do not have to scroll around to get to the link.
5. To get relevant ads, try to use the key words in the title of your article and intersperse them through the first couple of paragraphs.
6. Be very careful before adding the big commercial ads to your site. Unless you are talking specifically about products they offer, you won't make much profit there. As you can see, I am slowly removing that type of ad from my site, starting with the least profitable first.

I wondered why certain sites get so many hits and others with similar content don't do as well. I found out that many sites go to great pains to survey the search engines to find out what the most popular search words are. They then embed those words into their own pages.

Now, if your site is related to those topics, I can see how this might be beneficial. However, if the listing is simply a gratuitous list, I don't see people hanging around long enough to read your content or click through to your site specific ads.

However, many of the "how to" articles swear by the revenues you may create with this technique.

So, lets test the theory. I have a good idea of how many hits I get per day. I will ad a list of the popular searched words and see what the increase, if any is.

It should be noted I took out one or two that I found personally offensive.

When you display an Ad in the same location with the same colors and Ad format, regular visitors tend to ignore them. This is called Ad Blindness.

The tip here is to rotate between four different color palettes for your AdSense Ads.

1. Log in to your account at https://www.google.com/adsense
2. Click the AdSense Setup tab and choose AdSense for content as the product
3. Choose an Ad type and format.
4. In the Colors drop-down box, click ‘Use multiple palettes’, then select up to
4 color palettes by holding down the Control or Command key
5. Copy-and-paste the AdSense Ad code into web pages

As 4 different color schemes are used randomly on your page, there is a good chance that your visitors will click the Ad thereby increasing your click through rate (CTR) and allowing you earn more with AdSense.
